Christmas Tree Design – Step By Step
We all have those pictures in our minds of how we want our home to look and feel during the Christmas Season but sometimes those pictures are difficult to translate into actual decor. Let’s go through a few steps that will help you transform those ideas into reality this season.
Step 1 – Get your ideas onto paper (or whatever medium that techies use). Brainstorm with all of the ideas that you have because that will help you consolidate them as well as help to sculpt them into one central theme.
Step 2 – Decide on the color scheme that you prefer. Sometimes color will lead you to your theme.
Traditional Christmas Tree Design
If your ideas are circling around red and green with garlands and mistletoe, etc, then you are probably leaning more to a traditional theme. We can work with that.
Red and Green, lots of traditional mixed and matched ornaments, a star or an angel as a tree topper, garlands of popcorn, wooden beads, cranberries. There are so many items that evoke that nostalgic, traditional feeling and just create a home full of warmth.
Traditional and Rustic Collide
Some themes just go well together. Traditional and rustic themes are a good combination. If one of these particular themes doesn’t fully encompass what you are leaning toward, a melding of the two can create a wonderfully homey, country feel. This style also lends itself greatly to a natural look. You could even pick one element that you like and use it throughout, like the tree below uses the pinecone motif.
Step 3 – This would be a good time to decide if there is a particular motif that you favor. Is there a certain item that just makes you happy? Something that stands out in your mind as being a wonderful representative of how you feel about Christmas?
Rustic Christmas Tree Design
Rustic Christmas tree design is hugely popular with a great deal of people that I know. Maybe that’s because of where I live, or what I do. I honestly don’t know, I just know that it is big. Rustic can encompass a wide array of looks. Most people lean to a particular motif or item within the rustic look and run with it. That is, of course, where your favored motif comes in.
The Christmas Tree Design below is a great example of taking the farm motif all the way. From the chicken weather vane on top to the ornaments of feed buckets, livestock signs and antlers, all the way down to the galvanized buckets holding presents, this tree is held together by one rustic theme.
Traditional with a Unique Twist
Sometimes traditional Christmas tree design can just be a subdued approach, in traditional colors, with a stand out element like the wrought iron basket that the tree below sits in. The tree is cloaked in basic red and green with leaves as a common ornament but the unique aspect at the base of the tree makes a statement.
Christmas Tree Design with a Fiber Theme
Step 4 – Determine if there is a particular fiber or ribbon, etc that speaks to you. Sometimes that alone is enough to create your theme. Below you can see that the burlap is a constant note across the decor; from the ribbon on the tree to the stockings and the decorative pillow on the chair. Maybe you love lace or frilly ribbon. If you carry it throughout your decor, it will become your theme.
Let Your Ornaments Guide You
Maybe you have a special collection of ornaments or maybe you’ve seen some that you love and would like to use. If they are special enough to you, then use them to create your theme. You love Silver Bells? Go all out on a silver bells motif. Snowflakes your thing? Well then how about a flocked tree with snowflakes of all sizes and shapes throughout your design?
Step 5 – Decide if the visions in your head are more color than anything else. If so, then instead of letting color lead you to a theme, let it be your theme.
Color as a Theme
While red and green and the most traditional Christmas colors, red and white are also very popular and so beautiful. A red and white motif can make such a huge impact if you really focus on it as your theme. It’s not enough to have red and white ornaments. Go crazy and use red and white ribbon, garland, lights, tree skirt, pillows and the list goes on!
Are Natural and Organic Elements a Part of Your Life and Home?
Putting yourself into the theme, will make you happier than any made up theme. You have to live with it throughout the season, so make it yours by making it you. Let your own personality show through your Christmas Tree Design.
Handmade Christmas
Natural elements are a beautiful accent in a natural, organic motif. Drying orange slices is easy in a dehydrator and they make a real statement as well as adding warmth to your decor. Notice below that the orange slices are also carried through into the package wrap, tying it all up in a neat little ‘bow’.
Step 6 – Ask yourself if the theme you have in mind will fit the part of your home that surrounds it. It is important that your theme matches its surroundings. Standing out and sticking out are two very different feels!
Elegant Christmas Tree Design
There are so many ways to do elegant. Most have a very rich look to them. They are usually characterized by a monochromatic color scheme, and glitz; typically gold or silver. Some of the elements that lend themselves well to elegant Christmas tree design are florals, feathers, sequins, glitter, rhinestones, decadent ornaments and white lights…lots of white lights!
Thrice the Beauty
If your space allows for it, groupings of 3 are always on point, even with Christmas trees.
Purely Thematic Christmas Tree Design
The example below is pure theme. Bold ornament choices that fully reflect one central theme can offer really dramatic presentation in your Christmas decor. The oversized ornaments on this tree are really all it needs for maximum impact. Even though they are huge, it doesn’t feel overdone.
Many times, your theme or motif has a lot to do with where the tree is will be placed. For a child’s room or playroom, a fun whimsical theme will go over great, but that same theme in a ballroom or formal living room, might not play as well.
Frilly, girly and overdone really well. This overfilled tree would be beautiful in a feminine room and all the girls will love it.
And, who doesn’t love gingerbread cookies? This is a fun, playful theme that evokes a traditional Christmas feel.
