Wisdom of a Child; A Fierce Lesson in Parenting

wisdom
Me and my Babygirl

God must really love me because He has blessed my life in so many ways, but the most important way that He has blessed me is by giving me such wonderful children. It is the job of a mother to take care of her children, but sometimes the tables are turned and the child takes care of the mother; wisdom can be found in so many places.

Wisdom When it’s Needed

This is the situation, in which, I have found myself recently. After my most recent deployment overseas, I have had a great deal of trouble with my health and I am still working on trying to get myself back on track.

Sometimes it is very overwhelming, even to the point of fear of how I am going to take care of my children….enter God. He has always taken care of me and I know that He always will, but sometimes it looks a little gloomy and I guess I lose sight of that.

My Unlikely Hero

Sometimes the assistance that we need comes in the most unlikely places. My daughter, Paxton, fourteen years old, has become an absolute lifeline for me. God has truly given her the wisdom to be a help and even a caregiver to me, at times. Suffering from PTSD causes many different effects on a person’s life. My memory fails, and anxiety and depression, at times, take hold of me. In these times, Paxton takes over.

She has the wisdom to sense when these things are happening and she guides me. When she sees that my anxiety level is rising, she steers me away from the stressors and helps me to focus on something else. When my memory is failing, she remembers for me.

A mother’s job is to take care of her children. When I realized that she has been taking on this role for me, at first it hurt me; knowing that I am being a burden to her, at 14 years old. However, I realized that God has given her this wisdom for a reason and she is in training for His purposes.

Wisdom Can Be Found in Many Places

Paxton recently had an school assignment to write an Epic. She was supposed to pick a hero and use that as her subject. I have to put that assignment in this writing because it truly demonstrates a child’s wisdom; her ability to see beyond the outward appearance of an issue and understand its hidden meaning. She is gifted. The following is her Epic:

Her first step,

Tell the family: grieve

Over the news.

Next: leave the comfort of her home.

She loads up her gear,

Onto a cargo plane.

Surrounded by hundreds of people.

Sad Faces, brought back the tears.

The strong woman she is,

She choked back the emotion.

She put the fear aside.

She began her journey.

Fate unknown.

Anxiety overwhelmed her.

Depression consumed her.

Anger filled her mind.

She didn’t let it stop her.

Her mission was much too important.

She steps off the plane,

Thrown into a tent in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Shuttled to another plane,

Kabul to Bagram.

Grief overcoming her.

She knows nothing of tomorrow.

Forever away from home,

She yearns to feel

The touch of her children.

Wishes to hear their voices.

Dressed in full uniform,

Weapon and all.

Finally in her place,

Tears would soon fall.

Soon, depression faded.

Anger and rage

Taking its place.

Off to bed, a permanent frown on her face.

She places her combat boots beside her bed.

Helmet next to her.

Gun in hand.

Finally to sleep, not so safe and sound.

Yes, I am truly blessed. She chose me as her hero…she just doesn’t realize that she is mine.
