Marriage Maintenance 101: Love Notes, Therapy & Lube (for the Hinges on the Door… probably)

Marriage Maintenance 101 – Marriage isn’t a “set it and forget it” kind of thing. It’s not like a crockpot or a compost pile. It’s more like an old farmhouse — beautiful, full of character, and in need of regular maintenance if you don’t want things to start creaking, cracking, or growing mold in mysterious corners.

Just like a tractor needs oil or a barn door needs a good dose of WD-40, your marriage needs tune-ups to keep it running smoothly. The good news? A little consistent effort goes a long way — and some of it’s even fun.

Here’s how to keep the wheels turning and the love strong, long after the honeymoon has faded and the calendar’s filled with soccer practice and chicken feed deliveries.

1. Marriage Maintenance 101 – Check the Oil: Regular Emotional Check-Ins

Life moves fast, especially when you’re juggling work, chores, and finding the one sippy cup your toddler deems acceptable.

That’s why it’s essential to pause regularly and ask: How are we doing?

Check-ins don’t have to be deep, hour-long therapy sessions. Just a quick moment to look each other in the eyes (not over a screen), ask how the other is really doing, and listen with your whole heart.

2. Marriage Maintenance 101 – Tighten the Screws: Tackle the Little Issues Before They Rattle Loose

That thing that bugs you — the socks on the floor, the way they never close the cereal box, the sharp tone during morning chaos — it doesn’t seem like a big deal… until it is.

Unspoken frustrations pile up like mismatched Tupperware lids. So instead of letting it simmer, bring it up gently.

Pro tip: Choose your moment. "I love you, and can we talk about that sock situation?" lands better than, "I swear if I trip over one more sock I’m moving to the barn."

3. Marriage Maintenance 101 – Repaint the Porch: Keep Romance Looking Fresh

Romance doesn’t have to be roses and candlelight (though if you’re offering, I won’t say no). Sometimes it’s leaving a sticky note on the fridge that says, “I still think you’re hot.” Or surprising them with their favorite snack. Or kissing them before coffee.

Over time, the little romantic touches fade — not because the love fades, but because life gets noisy. So bring them back. Often.

Cheap thrill: Write a love note and hide it somewhere unexpected — like in their lunch, toolbox, or glovebox.

4. Marriage Maintenance 101 – Get Professional Help (Before You Think You “Need” It)

You don’t wait until your engine explodes to change the oil, right? Same goes for your marriage.

Couples counseling or a relationship workshop can be like a user’s manual for communication, empathy, and handling that one recurring argument about how many people should really be invited to Thanksgiving.

And no — therapy isn’t a sign of trouble. It’s a sign of investment.

5. Marriage Maintenance 101 – Apply Lube Liberally (Yes, Even for the Hinges)

Look, sometimes the “squeaky” parts of marriage are literal. That bedroom door that creaks like a haunted house? That’s fixable.

But let’s not ignore the figurative lube — the kind that keeps your physical relationship running smoothly, without pressure, shame, or awkward silence.

Whether it’s about improving your sex life, increasing affection, or just making space for touch again, it’s all part of maintenance. And yes, sometimes that includes actual lube. We’re grown-ups here.

Final Thought: Keep the Foundation Strong

Every marriage needs upkeep — not because it’s broken, but because it matters.

So check in, show up, and fix the little things before they become big things. Say the words. Make the effort. Keep the spark lit and the squeaks under control — in every sense of the word.

Because a well-loved marriage, like a well-loved farmhouse, doesn’t stay sturdy by accident. It stays strong because somebody kept tightening the bolts, patching the leaks, and leaving love notes in the toolbox.
