Let’s talk about intimacy. And no, it’s not just code for dim lights and Marvin Gaye (or Chris Stapleton) (though, hey, nothing wrong with that either).
Real intimacy in marriage is so much more than physical affection — it’s emotional connection, deep trust, spiritual closeness, and the quiet kind of love that doesn’t always make headlines but holds everything together. It’s the way you glance across a crowded room and know exactly what your partner is thinking (usually: “Can we leave yet?”).
So let’s break it down — with a little honesty and a lot of heart — and take inventory of the many layers of intimacy that keep a marriage strong.
1. Emotional Intimacy: The Soul Talk
This is where you let each other see behind the curtain. It’s talking about your dreams, your fears, your stress over whether the chicken coop needs repairing again.
When emotional intimacy is strong, you feel safe to share without being judged — and you’re just as safe listening without fixing.
Build it by:
- Asking open-ended questions: “What’s been weighing on you lately?”
- Sharing small moments of vulnerability: “I had a rough day. Can we just sit for a bit?”
- Being the calm when the other’s in chaos. (My husband, bless his heart, is great at this!)
2. Physical Intimacy: Not Just Sexy Time
Sure, physical intimacy includes sex — but it’s also hugs in the hallway, kisses on the forehead, holding hands during a farm-supply run, or that back rub after a long day.
Physical touch releases oxytocin (a.k.a. the love hormone), and regularly connecting skin-to-skin strengthens your bond. It doesn’t have to be a full-blown romantic rendezvous — sometimes, it’s just sitting shoulder to shoulder in comfortable silence.
Hint: Make space for affection even when you’re tired, grumpy, or in sweatpants. Especially then.
3. Intellectual Intimacy: Thinking Together
You know that rush when you and your partner are brainstorming, dreaming, or just nerding out over something random? That’s intellectual intimacy.
It’s the spark you get from sharing ideas, solving problems together, or learning side-by-side — whether it’s farm management, gardening goals, or who’s going to win the latest baking competition.
Try this:
- Read the same book and talk about it.
- Watch a documentary and debate it.
- Solve a problem together — bonus points if it involves duct tape and creativity.
4. Spiritual Intimacy: Deeper Ground
If faith is part of your relationship, spiritual intimacy can be a powerful foundation. Praying together, attending services, or simply sharing your values and beliefs can create a quiet but unshakable closeness.
It’s also about aligning your “why” — why you love, why you forgive, why you show up again and again.
Even if you're different: Respecting and discussing your spiritual beliefs (or questions) openly can still deepen your connection.
5. Recreational Intimacy: Play Together
Life’s hard. Marriage doesn’t have to be. When’s the last time you just had fun together — not coordinated logistics or solved problems, but laughed until your stomach hurt?
Recreational intimacy is the joy you share doing things just for the heck of it. Whether it’s hiking, dancing in the kitchen, building chicken tractors, or trying a new recipe and setting off the smoke alarm — joy is bonding.
Prescription: Find something fun, lighthearted, and just for the two of you. Do it regularly. Laugh freely. Make memories.
Final Thought: Intimacy Is the Glue (and Sometimes the Duct Tape)
Strong marriages aren’t built on one kind of closeness — they’re built on layers of connection that grow deeper with time, trust, and effort.
So take inventory. Where are you thriving? Where could you grow? And what little step could you take this week to draw a little closer?
Because the best kind of intimacy is the kind that wraps you in a knowing glance, a hand squeeze, and the deep-down feeling that even when life is messy, you’ve got each other.
