Farm Tour – Nycz Farm – Fun and Informative

Farm Tour

My husband and I recently took a little farm tour to Nycz Farm in Thackerville, Oklahoma. They are fairly close to us and we were looking for a few new bunnies. Through a friend, we were put in contact with Chris Nycz, owner of Nycz Farm and we made plans to come and have a farm visit.

Upon reaching the farm, we were pleasantly greeted by Chris …even though it was beginning to rain on us! But, regardless of the weather, he gave us a very enthusiastic tour of his place.

A Few Pics from the Farm Tour

Structures and Sections of the Farm

We were pleased to see all of the elements that he has put into place. We were able to view the rabbit pens and the waterfowl enclosure that he has built. They are beautifully tucked into the natural setting of his property. We also had the chance to see the chicken and turkey tractors that he has operating on his farm as well as peeking in on his quail.

He took us up the hill to see one of his gardening areas where he has begun a huglekulture garden, which I am so excited about putting into place on our property! We toured his goat pens and had the opportunity to enjoy a little time with them…love goats!

I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to take the farm tour as well as visiting with him about what he does. It is always enjoyable to visit with fellow farmers!

Chris Nycz, Interview

Chris, a project manager in the financial industry, began his farm in 2013. He has built up his farm from the bottom. He told us that the only thing that he was able to get put in place in 2013 was the water well, and he was very pleased to find out that he basically has unlimited water!

When I asked him about his favorite part of building and working on his farm, I really liked his answer. He stated,

“I really like the idea of tying all of the different elements of my farm together. For example, the rabbits I raise provide me with meat and fur, but also provide a tremendous amount of fertilizer. In the future, I could make some ‘rabbit tractors’ and use them to mow my yard! The fertilizer helps to grow some of the food that I feed to the rabbits.

Regarding the aquaponics system that I am working on, I look forward to the catfish, but also intend to use their waste to grow plants that will help to feed my colony rabbits and my water fowl. The plants will also provide shade for them. The plants I grow as well as the bacteria the system will attract help to clean the pond water. I love the symbiotic relationship that is created between the fish, plants and bacteria. This is a great example of how I try to tie seemingly disparate elements of my pond into a unified whole.”

Additional Affiliation – WWOOF

Another thing that I found very interesting was his affiliation with a group that I had not yet heard of, WWOOF. It is a worldwide movement linking volunteers with organic farmers and growers to promote cultural and educational experiences based on trust and non-monetary exchange, thereby helping to build a sustainable, global community.

Of his experience with WWOOF, he told me, “I believe strongly that man has a responsibility to be a steward of this planet and am generally of the opinion that we do a terrible job of this. On my farm, I am able to live in a manner more consistent with my philosophical views and though WWOOFing, I am able to share my perspective with others. Just being around people that share my perspective helps keep me more positive about life and can help to keep me motivated as I continue to endeavor to manifest the vision I have of my farm into a reality.”

The Future for Nycz Farm

As I always do, everytime I speak with a fellow farmer, gardener, homesteader, etc, I asked Chris what his plans were for the future. I really enjoyed his response. “I want to keep adding elements to my farm in order to produce enough to provide for my needs, to sell to others in order to pay for all of my farm expenses and allow me to retire from my job. Finally, I would like to be able to help feed the hungry possibly through food banks.”

We had a great time on our Nycz Farm Tour as well as getting to visit with Chris. I look forward to future visits because I know that there will continually be more to see!
