When God Speaks 2 – Biblical Parenting
My latest ‘When God Speaks’ installment is centered on biblical parenting; that is, parenting based on what God has taught us through His word. The video tells the story but this past weekend, we had a situation here at the farm that, not only tested my patience but also gave me the opportunity to dive into what God says about handling parenting and to share that with you.
The Situation
The weather was beautiful and the entire family was out working together in the garden area. Kris and I were working on multiple projects. Our granddaughters were pulling weeds in the hoop house and we had the three boys pulling weeds in the garden beds.
My stepson is not terribly used to the kind of hard work we all do here on the farm, as he isn’t with us all the time, so he was already not a happy camper. I showed him how to do the job (multiple times) and he simply just was not going to do it. We went through all of that for quite some time, with him throwing a bunch of attitude my way until I got mad enough that I had to walk off for a bit.
Looking for Resolution
That evening I sat down and had a talk with him to explain the situation; what he did wrong, why I got so upset, and why it is important that he, not only learns to work hard but also that he learns to do what he is told and to be respectful.
Within a short time, my 14-year-old son came over to talk to him. I heard him say that, basically, it’s not fun to get in trouble but mom does it the right way-she tells us what we did wrong, why it’s wrong, and what we can do to fix it. …I was blown away! PARENTING WIN!!! (You gotta take them where you can get them!)
Later, as I was thinking about what my subject would be for this week’s When God Speaks installment, I realized that this is exactly what God was speaking to me about. I dove into the scriptures and pulled out a few that I believe all parents should take to heart.
When God Speaks 2 – Biblical Parenting
He who spares the rod hates his son but he who loves him is careful to discipline.
Proverbs 13:24
Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death.
Proverbs 19:18
Fathers do not embitter your children or they will become discouraged.
Colossians 3:24
No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained on it.
Hebrews 12:11
Fathers do not exasperate your children; instead bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Ephesians 6:4
Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it.
Proverbs 22:6
When God Speaks 2; Conclusion
Parenting is not an easy task, but it is a worthy one. God entrusts these precious gifts to us as parents and it is our duty to raise them properly. That requires time, effort, and …lots of prayer! Biblical parenting is parenting by the most perfect manual available. It is my prayer that we all work more every day toward raising our children in the way that God asks. Our children will benefit from that kind of love and care.
