Growing Together – Marriage isn’t just a moment — it’s a marathon. (A sweaty, sometimes uphill, occasionally hilarious marathon with snacks and bathroom breaks and occasional blisters.)
The longer you’re together, the more life throws at you — moves, babies, job changes, heartbreaks, triumphs, grocery lists, gray hairs, and the never-ending question of “What’s for dinner?”
And through it all, couples have a choice: grow together or slowly drift apart while scrolling their phones side-by-side on the couch.
Here’s how to keep your love not just surviving, but thriving, in the long haul — complete with wrinkles, inside jokes, and the kind of comfort that only comes from years of showing up.
1. Growing Together – Make Space for Evolution
You’re not the same people you were when you first fell in love — and that’s a good thing. Growth is part of the journey.
Careers shift. Dreams evolve. Personalities deepen. And sometimes, your spouse starts eating cauliflower willingly and you barely recognize them.
Let each other change. Cheer it on. Ask questions. Stay curious about who your partner is becoming — and let them be curious about you, too.
Try this: Every now and then, ask each other: “What’s something new you’ve been thinking about lately?” It’s amazing what you’ll learn.
2. Growing Together – Choose Love on Purpose (Even on the Blah Days)
Romantic love starts with a spark, but lasting love is a choice. It’s waking up every day and deciding to be kind, even when you’re annoyed. To forgive, even when you’d rather hold a grudge. To kiss goodnight, even after a cranky day.
Love isn’t always loud or poetic. Sometimes it’s taking out the trash without being asked. Sometimes it’s listening to the same story again, this time with eye contact.
And sometimes? It’s giving your partner the last bite of dessert. That’s basically true love right there.
Life is messy. Marriage is messier. But if you can laugh together — really laugh — you can weather almost anything.
Find the funny. Embrace the ridiculous. Make up nonsense songs about chores. Reminisce about your most awkward moments. Let laughter be your glue when nothing else makes sense.
Because when all else fails, there’s nothing like locking eyes across a chaotic kitchen and bursting into giggles over burned toast or a toddler’s meltdown.
4. Growing Together – Dream New Dreams Together
Whether it’s retiring to a cabin, starting a farm stand, traveling the country, or simply sleeping past 6 a.m. — keep setting goals as a team.
Revisit your dreams often. Adjust as needed. And don’t forget to celebrate the small milestones along the way — like surviving flu season without a single argument or remembering your anniversary without Facebook’s help.
5. Growing Together – Love Isn’t Perfect — But It’s Worth It
No marriage is flawless. Even the happiest couples have rough days, disagreements, and moments where one person seriously considers moving into the shed out back for a little peace and quiet.
But the beauty of long-term love is in its resilience. In its layers. In the comfort of knowing someone sees all your mess and still chooses to stay.
That’s the magic: Choosing each other, again and again, even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard.
Final Thought: Keep Growing Side by Side
The long game of love isn’t won with grand gestures or perfection — it’s won with steady, quiet faithfulness. With check-ins and laughter, shared vision and soft landings. With holding hands through change and reminding each other that even when the winds shift, your roots go deep.
So plant your dreams, water your connection, and keep growing.
Together.
